In an effort to expose the inconsistent and unjustified account suspensions and video removals on YouTube, President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against the company in 2021. The lawsuit was over his suspension from YouTube following the January 6th Capitol attack. The lawsuit argued the suspension was a violation of his First Amendment rights and claimed YouTube was acting as a government agent due to alleged pressure from the federal government. YouTube finally agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle the lawsuit.
The settlement earmarks $22 million for Trump to contribute to the Trust for the National Mall and a construction of a White House ballroom, according to court documents filed Monday. The remaining $2.5 million will be paid to other parties involved in the case, including the writer Naomi Wolf and the American Conservative Union.
